MEDIC University Set to Launch First Class
|
Imagine clicking through tips on how to successfully combine MEDIC FIRST AID Training Programs, watching an interactive video detailing how to improve your demonstration skills, customizing your student training approach, or learning how to maximize your program offerings-all while snug in slippers and robe, hot coffee in hand, any time of day from the comfort of your home.
Now, stop imagining. MEDIC University, the online learning campus of MEDIC FIRST AID, will debut the interactive version of AED Supplement in early 2004. Designed as an off-site supplement to student training, the AED course marks the first phase of the MEDIC University roll out. Eventually, all MEDIC FIRST AID core and supplementary programs will be accessible online, as well as extensive Facilitator resources, including video skills demonstration, program video transcripts, and student testing and record management.

Explosions Test Emergency Training
|
Editor's Note: These Good Samaritan recipients were nominated by MEDIC FIRST AID Master Trainer Linda Markin, president of Lee-Mark Safety, a MEDIC FIRST AID Gold Training Center located in Tyler, Texas.
"On July 3, 2003, David Sage of Kilgore, Texas, was heading home from his job at Halliburton in the Kilgore Cementing department. He was driving behind another car when suddenly two rockets shot across the road. Both cars stopped. David walked up to the other car, and the driver asked if he thought it would be safe to pass; then the building to their right blew up, sending scrap metal, sheet metal, and bricks across their path.
David called 911 and informed them of the explosion. Meanwhile, Tommy Woods, a co-worker of David's, had been at work when he felt and heard the explosion. He knew that some people already heading home would have been traveling in the direction of the explosion. So, Tommy drove to see if they had made it home safely.
As David and Tommy were waiting for the city's emergency response team, a woman came running from the direction of the blast, bleeding from her right hand and in shock. Tommy sat her down and David got a cool wet towel for her head and grabbed his first aid kit. The woman called out a man's name and said five more people were in the building when the explosion happened. She said the building contained fireworks-five to six thousand pounds of fireworks, they later found out. They passed the information to a police officer who had arrived on scene, and the officer enlisted their help.
David was instructed to evacuate the businesses on nearby Highway 259. Tommy was responsible for getting the injured, barefoot woman to the ambulance. Broken glass and debris were everywhere, so Tommy carried her to the ambulance then went back to his truck, and then a second explosion occurred. He got in his pickup, turned around, and stopped at the roadblock to talk to the state troopers. The trooper asked if he would assist at the intersection, which he did until more police arrived. Meanwhile, David evacuated people at a nearby restaurant.
We may go a lifetime and never need to test the skills learned in required training. But when David and Tommy were presented with the opportunity, they were cool-headed, helpful, and prepared. Their mastery of these competencies, combined with their winning personalities, is what makes David and Tommy the kind of people Halliburton is proud to have on their team."
Special thanks to Halliburton and Anthony Bartolucci, a Halliburton health safety advisor, for contributing this article.

Philips HeartStart AED One of "Best of 2003"
|
|
The Philips HeartStart Home Defibrillator was named a winner in Popular Science's 2003 "Best of What's New" competition. Chosen in the Personal Health category, the award recognizes the HeartStart as a leader in its class. One hundred winners in 12 categories were selected from over 1,000 entries. MEDIC FIRST AID congratulates Philips for this well-deserved recognition.
The HeartStart is the first of a new generation of defibrillators designed specifically for the home to provide treatment for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), a leading cause of death in the United States. Since over 75 percent of SCAs happen in the home, designing a home-use model was an imperative at Philips. "[We] carefully designed the HeartStart Home Defibrillator to be the industry's easiest-to-use defibrillator. We are dedicated to helping people in emergency situations use technology successfully," said Deborah DiSanzo, vice president and general manager for cardiac resuscitation at Philips Medical Systems.

MEDIC Q&A: CarePlus CPR™
|
With the release of new products, programs, updates, and ini-tiatives, MEDIC NEWS and VISIONS will feature question and answer sessions with members of the MEDIC FIRST AID staff. For this inaugural MEDIC Q&A, we spoke with Bill Clendenen, president of MEDIC FIRST AID, and Bill Rowe, paramedic, and manager of training programs, about the newly released CarePlus CPR, a community-focused, comprehensive train-ing program in emergency resuscitation skills for the lay rescuer.
Q: There's a lot of excitement surrounding the release of CarePlus CPR. What makes this new program unique?
A: CarePlus CPR focuses on the treatment of immediate life threatening problems. Many medical problems, such as fractures, heart attacks, and strokes, are discussed in the context of emergencies in other training programs, but these problems generally don't present an "immediate" life threat. What's interesting is that when problems degrade into a life threatening condition, they follow a similar pattern, starting with a diminished level of responsiveness followed by respiratory and cardiac failure. It's at this point in a medical emergency that patients will not survive without bystander intervention and care. CarePlus CPR does an excellent job focusing students on skills to manage these events.
CarePlus CPR's specific focus makes it a shorter course, too. Other unique features include an Infant and Child skills training option, non-occu-pation-al and international video settings, and optional control of bleeding and shock management segments.
Q: CarePlus CPR debuts a few design changes, too, such as smaller student guides. Are there any others, and why were these changes made?
A: Smaller student guides mean convenience, being able to take the guide and put it in a desk drawer, glove box, or first aid kit. The smaller guides are also less expensive to purchase and ship, a plus for Facilitators. We also added a new information segment to the student guide portraying unique rescue situations and we integrated the Successful Completion Cards and certificates into the student guide.
Q: The press release for CarePlus CPR notes that it's the "perfect complement" to the MEDIC FIRST AID AED Supplement. Can you explain this complementary relationship?
A: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the single largest cause of death in industrialized nations. The treatment for SCA is immediate CPR followed by defibrillation as soon as it's available. Since SCA is the primary problem for which we are preparing CarePlus CPR students, we have inserted a segment at the beginning entitled "Sudden Cardiac Arrest and the Chain of Survival."
Combining CarePlus CPR with our AED Supplement creates a CPR/AED program that meets AED legislation in many states. It matches other national program offerings so our Facilitators can offer an "apples to apples" match for an alternative program.
As well, many companies and communities looking for Public Access Defibrillation courses want CPR/AED training that can be taught in a reasonably short period. CarePlus CPR combined with AED meets that need. You can also add Pediatric Defibrillation if you choose to teach Infant and Child skills.
Facilitators wishing to purchase CarePlus CPR must have training in Adult, Infant, and Child CPR. To purchase CarePlus CPR call a MEDIC FIRST AID Client Services representative at 800-800-7099.

Alaskan Duo Share Founders Award
|
MEDIC FIRST AID® co-founder Maryl Barker presented Evelyne Tunley-Daymude and Melody Daniell with the inaugural MEDIC FIRST AID Founders Award, capping the October 17 evening reception at Conference 2003, in Portland, Oregon. Tunley-Daymude (pictured right, with Bill Clendenen and Chris Bennett) accepted the award (Daniell was unable to attend) and spoke about her and Daniell's work with the South-central Foundation, an Anchorage, Alaska organization dedicated to im-proving the health and well-being of Alaska Natives and American Indians.
Before stepping off the stage, Bill Clendenen, president of MEDIC FIRST AID, surprised Tunley-Daymude with a Philips HeartStart AED, donated to the Southcentral Foundation. In a quick trip back to the microphone, Tunley-Daymude expressed her gratitude, and later, in an email, noted that "the AED will be placed in the Elders Program facility maintaining our commitment to quality as we strive to provide the best services for the Native community."
Barker noted that, as MEDIC FIRST AID Master Trainers, Tunley-Daymude (certified since 1987) and Daniell (1990), have "displayed an enduring commitment to safety education and awareness in the community, dedication to CPR and first aid instruction, and the advancement of the MEDIC FIRST AID ideal."
Tunley-Daymude serves as Southcentral's Development Center manager, where she integrates MEDIC FIRST AID Training Programs into Southcentral's community service efforts, which include the recently created Advanced First Aid Team.
Daniell teaches a range of MEDIC FIRST AID programs at Southcentral. She noted that while her initial focus may be on workplace safety, the training resonates far beyond. "These skills have benefited both the organizations and their families."
MEDIC FIRST AID congratulates and extends appreciation to Tunley-Daymude and Daniell for their exemplary representation of the MEDIC FIRST AID ideal, and their commitment to the underserved communities of Alaska.
