MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, for Corrections and Law Enforcement

2 Person CPROccupations with specific hazards require specialized training to meet their occupational needs. Corrections and law enforcement are such occupations. When it comes to providing CPR and basic emergency care, officers face hazards that must be addressed. EMP America is developing MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, for Corrections and Law Enforcement to address those needs.

A panel of MEDIC FIRST AID Facilitators from corrections and law enforcement assisted in the development of this special version. In addition, a survey was sent to all corrections and law enforcement Facilitators. Over one hundred surveys were completed and returned. The information gathered was used to custom design the program and create realistic scenarios.

Our cornerstone MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0 program was created in a template format so additional programs such as this could be developed quickly to meet client's needs. Also, by using the template, Facilitators will be able to teach the new programs without additional training.

Filming an Initial Assessment scenario with Lane County Sheriff DepartmentThe most significant difference in providing emergency care by corrections and law enforcement officers is in the initial approach to the patient. For this reason a modified version of SETUP (scene assessment) was created to minimize the risk for the officers. Whether dealing with a suspect or inmate, the officers are working with a less healthy population that has a greater incidence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), hepatitis, and tuberculosis. Suspects may have contaminated needles hidden in their clothing and inmates may have shanks, sharp stabbing/slashing instruments fashioned out of a variety of materials. Suspects and inmates may create diversions to "setup" officers to cause them harm or distract them while they cause harm to others.

The new MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, for Corrections and Law Enforcement will be available on January 31, 2002. We want to thank the many agencies that have assisted with information and resources to make the creation of this program possible. If you would like more information on this exciting new program contact Client Services at (800) 800-7099 or (541) 344-7099 or email us.

New Bloodborne Pathogens Program

The MEDIC FIRST AID Bloodborne Pathogens training program is currently being updated. The latest edition will include new information on hepatitis C and will reflect updated information from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) standard.

Sheila Spears, R.N., a specialist in infectious diseases, lends her expertise to explain to students how to reduce their risk from bloodborne pathogens.

The program focuses on the occupational first aid provider and realistically portrays the exposure situations commonly encountered. Scenes in the program's video include a warehouse worker exposed to a splash of blood in the eye and a manufacturing employee who provides first aid care to a bleeding coworker while minimizing her risk of exposure.

Specific disease information includes hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Other program segments discuss exposure control plans, recognizing the potential for exposure, using personal protective equipment, engineering and work practice controls, housekeeping, hepatitis B vaccination, steps to take when an exposure occurs, and communicating hazards through signs and labels.

The updated Bloodborne Pathogens program is an excellent complement to MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0. The system is designed so the video and materials for the Facilitator and student share the same instructional design. This provides increased flexibility for Facilitators wanting to combine both MFA Basic and Bloodborne Pathogens training to meet OSHA requirements for occupational first aid and bloodborne pathogens standards.

New MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric Program

Coos Bay Police assisted with filming of new program. The newest version of the MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric course is scheduled for release April 1, 2002. The development team has started updating MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric to meet the Guidelines 2000 for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care; International Consensus on Science: Circulation 2000: 102 (suppl); ©2000 American Heart Association, Inc.

Early in the development process an intense brainstorming session helped outline new video scenarios. Some of this work has already been completed since new scenarios videotaped for the Infant/Child Supplement will also be used in the Pediatric program.

Until the new program can be completed, Pediatric Facilitators should consider using the Infant/Child Supplement to complement the previous MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric course or the MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0 program.

MEDIC FIRST AID Provider performs CPR on patient.

MEDIC FIRST AID Basic training programs have been completely updated. As of January 1, 2002, EMP America will no longer support MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Mark III or Basic, Mark IV.

In order to maintain your status as a MEDIC FIRST AID Facilitator you must update to MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0 now.

The updating of the Basic program was needed in order to respond to changes in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC)) guidelines. New first aid guidelines from the National Guidelines for First Aid Training in Occupational Settings are also reflected in the new program.

MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0 also offers increased flexibility by giving you more course options. A strong core program containing the essential knowledge and skills required by a first aid provider can now be enriched with additional specific first aid topics. Supplements in AED, Emergency Oxygen, Infant and Child Emergencies, and Bloodborne Pathogens are available to meet various training needs and regulatory requirements.

Support materials for the new Basic program are now even easier to use for students and Facilitators. New tools such as retraining scenarios and a challenge option give you greater ability to adapt the program to meet students' needs.
