MEDIC FIRST AID® Launches Health & Safety Programs

MEDIC HEALTH & SAFETYTM combines workplace safety and OSHA compliance training and education

MEDIC FIRST AID International has released more than 20 new business and industry health and safety programs. The MEDIC HEALTH & SAFETY collection addresses specific workplace safety and compliance issues and applicable OSHA compliance regulations. The programs were created in response to rising workers' compensation costs, an increase in lost workdays due to on-the-job injuries, and complex OSHA regulations.

Each program helps ensure your workplace meets OSHA compliance requirements, and comes with fully-scripted programs featuring videos, complete OSHA guide-lines, and required written materials. Designed for the experienced safety officer and the complete novice, the programs offer step-by-step instructions for trainers.

"MEDIC HEALTH & SAFETY programs are easy to use," said MEDIC FIRST AID President Bill Clendenen. "Since there's no skill training involved, you don't need prior safety knowledge or experience to teach any of the programs. They cover only what you need to know, saving you time while contributing to a healthier, safer work environment."

MEDIC FIRST AID has partnered with Minnesota-based Comprehensive Loss Management, Inc. (CLMI) to introduce MEDIC HEALTH & SAFETY to its customers. CLMI is an award-winning producer of educational programs, with over 40 years of OSHA compliance and safet management experience.

The cost of each MEDIC HEALTH & SAFETY program is $389, and each employee handbook is $1.25. As an introductory offer, until September 15 you will receive a ten percent discount on each MEDIC HEALTH & SAFETY program you order. Just mention code HS03.

Purchase programs individually, as a complete set, or in combinations relevant to workplace demand. Some programs are available closed captioned, with many titles also available in Spanish. Contact MEDIC FIRST AID at 800-800-7099, or visit www.medicfirstaid.com to request a product catalog or to order.

First Time First Responders Calm and Collected

Editor's Note: This Good Samaritan nomination comes from MEDIC FIRST AID Facilitator Dennis Jordan, Safety Specialist for Boise Cascade Corporation, in Medford, Oregon. He wished to formally acknowledge the efforts of Charles Lee Larson and Larry Balloy in helping to save a fellow Boise employee's life.

In November of last year, having just set a load of plywood up on a stack, a forklift operator in the plywood-manufacturing plant suffered what could have been a fatal dysrhythmia. About an hour into the morning shift, he was discovered slumped over the steering wheel by a fellow employee. The employee pulled him out of the forklift and called for help. Head electrician Lee Larson and machine operator Larry Balloy, both trained MEDIC FIRST AID emergency care providers, were the first responders on the scene.

During the four minutes between the call to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and their arrival, Lee and Larry were able to administer rescue breaths and compressions. They also had to turn the patient on his side to clear his airway, which was obstructed by vomitus. As they continued CPR, EMS arrived and took over care of the patient.

By the time Dennis Jordan arrived on the scene, EMS had loaded the patient into an ambulance, having shocked him twice with manual defibrillation. The patient left the scene with great blood pressure, given the circumstances. He went on to get a pacemaker and make a full recovery. And that's in no small part to the efforts of Lee and Larry, who had never had to use their CPR training before.

One final note: another factor that helped save the patient's life was the success of Boise's emergency response plan. An emphasis is placed throughout the MEDIC FIRST AID programs on creating and communicating a simple, yet comprehensive emergency communication plan.

The Boise plant is a sprawling space; over 300 employees work spread out over a 17-acre area, all under one roof. But on that day, a clear radio communication chain was in effect as soon as the emergency alert call went out over the radio system. Not only did Lee and Larry, who were nearby, respond quickly, but another forklift operator working across the plant met EMS at the entrance and lead them directly to the site of the downed man.

MERGINET Founder Richard Bilger Joins MEDIC FIRST AID®

MEDIC FIRST AID introduces MER-GINET.com Founder and Publisher Richard Bilger as the newest addition to the MEDIC FIRST AID family. Richard brings the same commitment to and passion for the emergency care field exemplified by the phenomenal success of MERGINET.com, which is the leading online community portal for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. Already, Richard's at work developing current and new product initiatives and planning ways to expand the company's online resources for independent and corporate facilitators.

"Richard's strong presence and experience in the EMS market gives him a unique perspective on the needs and goals of EMS providers," said MEDIC FIRST AID President Bill Clendenen. "We're excited to add his vision to our business development and online initiatives. His creativity, ingenuity, and forward thinking will produce immediate and long-term results for the company."

Richard founded and developed MERGINET.com in 1995. Providing daily industry news, management advice, discussion groups, classified ads, and a bookstore, MERGINET.com has connected EMS professionals in over 95 countries.

He sold the profitable Web site to Moore Medical, Inc. in July 2000, remaining as publisher under a multi-year contract. His extensive work in the EMS industry includes previous positions as Marketing Communications Manager for Matrx Medical, a distributor of emergency medical supplies, and Director of Sales and Marketing for JEMS Communications, a publisher of leading industry publications and conferences relating to the EMS industry. Richard is also an Advisory Board Member of the AED Instructor Foundation, and a National Guidelines for First Aid Training in Occupational Settings Project Team Member.

Richard will be targeting specific partnership opportunities, promoting AED sales on a national and local level, and expanding MEDIC FIRST AID's online presence to become the leader in CPR/first aid online training programs. CEO Chris Bennett remarked, "Richard's unique and enterprising approach to the EMS industry will inspire the company. He's working with each department, seeking to refine and advance the MEDIC FIRST AID vision. It's a real pleasure to welcome him."

Joining MEDIC FIRST AID was the next logical step, Richard noted, in strengthening the connection between the lay responder and EMS personnel. "I've been working in the EMS industry for over 15 years, and I see this as a wonderful opportunity to build on the MEDIC FIRST AID vision of 'continuity of care,' that critical set of links between pre-EMS and EMS care."

Richard's world is defined by emergency care. His wife moonlights as an Emergency Medical Technician when not operating a private client travel business, and he donates computer expertise to his local EMS provider. In the rare moments when Richard's not working, you'll likely find him with his wife and their five-year-old son adrift on a boat somewhere. Though he gave up competitive sailing a few years ago, he still thinks of the water as the best place to get away from the bustle of business.

MEDIC FIRST AID® Pediatric Now Available in Spanish

In our continued effort to expand the reach of our emergency care training programs, MEDIC FIRST AID announces the release of Primeros Auxilios Pediátricos de MEDIC FIRST AID, the Spanish-language version of MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric, Version 5.0.

Though focused on response to infants and children, adult skills are also included and may be taught when desired or if required by regulation. The program negotiates the often discouraging language gap for the Spanish-speaking student. Native Spanish speakers now have the opportunity to more easily learn basic CPR and first aid skills.

The video narration and all text screens have been translated, while the real-time scenarios have Spanish subtitles. The Facilitator Guide remains in English; references to Student Guide pages remain the same. Student materials translated into Spanish include the Student Guide, Wallet Skill Guide, Barrier Flyer, and the Successful Completion Sheet. In order to make it easier for regulatory inspectors to verify training, the Successful Completion Card remains in English.

For the Facilitator, translated reproducible items include Performance Evaluations, Written Knowledge Review and Answer Sheet, Appendix C, and the Statement of Understanding. The Talk-Through Scenarios have also been translated.

Visit the MEDIC FIRST AID online store at www.medicfirstaid.com to order your copy, or call your Client Services representative at 800-800-7099 to order by phone.
