MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric, Version 5.0, featuring updated CPR guidelines and the innovative instructional design found in all Version 5.0 products, is now available from MEDIC FIRST AID International. MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric is designed with parents and child care providers in mind. The program covers child, infant, and adult care skills. It describes care for immediate life-threatening problems along with specific first aid topics and injury prevention topics. This version of the Pediatric program offers the same flexibility enjoyed by users of MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0. The core component of MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric, Version 5.0 provides the information and skills necessary to manage the most immediate life-threatening problems that could be faced by a person caring for a child. Specific First Aid Topics and Prevention Topics found in both the Facilitator and Student Guides can be added to the core information. This helps meet regulatory requirements and addresses special circumstances such as extended response times by Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Updating to MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric, Version 5.0 is simple. If you are updating from MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric, it may be beneficial for you to attend an update training session to become familiar with the differences in the instructional design between the current version and Version 5.0. However, we recognize it may be difficult to attend a formal training session. For this reason, if you are current in MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric you can complete the update on your own. To update on your own you will be asked to review the Facilitator Self-Study Guide and video. Complete the 50-question Written Knowledge Review (current MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0 Facilitators are not required to complete this step). You will review the Major Resuscitation Guideline Changes document and complete the 25-question Written Knowledge Review as outlined in your update kit. To receive your updated card and be eligible to purchase MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric, Version 5.0 materials complete the Facilitator Application in your update kit and return it along with Answers Sheets to MEDIC FIRST AID headquarters. Materials required to update will vary depending on your current status. Call our Client Services staff at (800) 800-7099 to learn what you need for updating to MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric, Version 5.0.

Cardiac arrest primarily affects adults but can also strike infants and children. AEDs designed for adults are not designed for treating children because of the high energy levels delivered. The Philips FR2 AED has been designed to use special pediatric defibrillation pads that contain an attenuated circuit to reduce the energy and safely deliver defibrillation shocks to infants and young children. The optional segment includes a video scenario, student handout, and Facilitator Guide pages. It can be added to the Basic with AED or Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) course options in MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0 or into the recently updated AED Supplement program. Facilitators will be able to create forms for use in class directly from their computers instead of having to create copies from the paper master in their Facilitator Guides. Program update materials available on the Web site will allow Facilitators to stay current with the latest program developments. Look for updated materials reflecting changes in technical guidelines or improvements in the training program. Facilitators can also look up specific state program requirements for the states in which they conduct training. Check these prior to training to make sure the MEDIC FIRST AID program you are using meets any additional state requirements beyond the MEDIC FIRST AID course. Visit medicfirstaid.com to find out more. Go to the Facilitator Support section and enter your Registry number as your User ID and the last four digits of your Social Security Number as your password. You may call us at (800) 800-7099 for assistance.

Angel remembered the MEDIC FIRST AID training he’d gone through just weeks earlier with other Pasco students at the end of their ninth-grade health class. The program is a combined effort of Pasco educators and the local fire department. “I just did what I was taught to do,” says Angel. Without hesitation, Angel yelled for the barber to call 911. He knew it would take a while for the ambulance to arrive, so he grabbed a sweater to use as a pillow for the seizure victim, then checked his breathing and pulse. Following the seizure, the man was struggling to breathe. Angel tilted his head and lifted his chin to make sure the airway was clear. Gum was stuck in the man’s throat. Angel swept it out with his finger. The patient began to breathe better. Angel stayed with him until paramedics arrived. “I was shocked the whole time this was going on, but I wasn’t scared,” Angel confides. “Most of what I did was instinct and reaction. I didn’t panic and everything felt natural.” Paramedics thanked Angel Rosales and the barber and carried the patient to the ambulance. The assistant fire chief sees the Pasco program as a valuable tool to all students and to the community. He told local students that if even one kid saves a life, then it’s worth it. The chief said, “Now we all know just how important this type of training really is.” (Editor’s note: MFA Facilitator Charlotte Troxel forwarded this report. The details appeared in the Tri-City Herald of Pasco, Washington.)

MEDIC FIRST AID now sells emergency care response kits, emergency oxygen equipment, and defibrillators. “Our Facilitators have been asking us to supply them with these items to help support their training efforts,” explains Bill Clendenen, Vice President of Business Development. He adds, “we have selected easy to use, durable products that we feel reflect the quality that our clients expect from MEDIC FIRST AID.” First Aid Supplies
A personal and home version of the kit are available with the home version containing more supplies for emergencies. Supplies contained in the kits include barriers, trauma pads and gauze bandages, tape, and shears. The home emergency response kit also has eyewash, a cold pack, antiseptic wipes, and antibiotic ointment. Also, a Bandage and Pain Care Pack was developed and contains bandages, antiseptics, and medications to help manage minor first aid problems. Its small size makes it ideal for a purse, briefcase, or backpack. Emergency Oxygen Equipment
The LIFE-612 Emergency Oxygen System is capable of providing oxygen at 6 and 12 liter per minute flow rates for high inspired oxygen concentrations. The system is refillable, available in both hard and soft cases, and can be wall mounted. The system also meets the FDA’s requirements for emergency oxygen equipment and therefore does not require a prescription for purchase. “It is one of the easiest oxygen systems to use. All you do is turn the system on and place the mask on the patient’s face,” describes Clendenen. “The mask is designed for both breathing and non-breathing patients.” Facilitators looking for oxygen training supplies can also purchase regulators, tubings, and oxygen delivery devices such as nasal cannula and simple, ventilation and non-rebreather masks. Defibrillators MEDIC FIRST AID has been selling automated external defibrillator (AED) training supplies since their widespread introduction to first aid training over six years ago. Now, Philips FR2 Defibrillators and supplies are available. “Many clients have asked us to sell defibrillators as a service,” notes Clendenen. “Philips defibrillator products are easy-to-use, reliable, and also are featured in many MEDIC FIRST AID training programs.” To purchase any of these products or if you have any questions, visit the MEDIC FIRST AID Online Store or call us at (800) 800-7099.

“The catalog serves a number of purposes,” explains Bill Clendenen, Vice President, Business Development. It is first a tool that provides an overview of our programs and products. Core programs such as MEDIC FIRST AID Basic and Pediatric are first and are then followed by other programs and supplements. Clendenen adds, “We also wanted to explain our core philosophies.” The catalog provides an overview of the medical guidelines, instructional design, Facilitator levels, and training opportunities for MEDIC FIRST AID. “One of the exciting uses of the catalog is that it can be used to educate your own clients,” describes Clendenen. “Whether you’re soliciting new business as an Independent Trainer or educating the head of human resources, you’ll be able to show the flexible training options that working with MEDIC FIRST AID affords.” Additionally, to help satisfy your first aid training needs, MEDIC FIRST AID now offers more manikins, AED training supplies, and personal protective equipment. Plus, oxygen equipment, emergency care kits, and defibrillators are now available. All these products are featured in the new catalog. “The difficult aspect of creating MEDIC FIRST AID’s catalog is that so much of what we are and do is intangible,” states Clendenen. “It’s how our Facilitators create a successful training event every time. Or how a MEDIC FIRST AID trained provider comes to the assistance of an ill or injured person. That’s why we included Good Samaritan stories and quotes from many of our clients." The MEDIC FIRST AID Product Catalog is a multipurpose tool that will help you market your training programs and facilitate your interactions with MEDIC FIRST AID. “This Product Catalog is the first in a series of marketing tools we are developing to help you promote MEDIC FIRST AID Training Programs” says Clendenen. To order extra copies of the MEDIC FIRST AID Product Catalog, contact Client Services at (800) 800-7099. Catalogs are sold in bundles of 10 for $3.00.
