On the afternoon of Wednesday, November 13th, David Bachman was picking his child up from school. While backing out of the school parking lot, he noticed a young boy being struck by a vehicle. After parking his vehicle in the road to block traffic, he went to assist the young man. Arriving at his side, David noticed the right foot had been run over. The student was in pain and was confused. While performing a physical assessment, he noticed that the flesh had been torn from the foot exposing the inner muscles and bone of the foot. The wound was bleeding very badly and needed treatment immediately. David used direct pressure on the artery of his leg to control the bleeding. The foot needed support due to the break and was accomplished by supporting the leg and foot by hand while also controlling the bleeding. EMS arrived at the scene approximately 5 to 10 minutes after the accident occurred. He informed the EMS team about the injuries he had assessed during the initial evaluation. The EMS team asked David to provide them with assistance since he was already controlling the bleeding. They got the patient's foot into a protective air splint for support and wrapped the wound with cloth to help stop the bleeding. A backboard was slipped under him and he was moved to a stretcher for transport to the hospital. After he was loaded up, the EMS team gave David assistance in cleaning the blood and other possible contaminants from his skin. The young man eventually got out of the hospital and has been recovering. His foot still needs some rehab but the outlook is good for a full recovery.

The popular CarePlus™ CPR program is in the process of being updated. Using MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0 as a framework, the program focuses on adult, child, and infant resuscitation skills. In addition to CPR and in reference to the "Plus" in the course's title, the course includes Initial Assessment, Choking Management, Control of Bleeding, Shock Management, and Ongoing Assessment. This course is designed to meet requirements for training in CPR. It can be combined with a first aid course to meet OSHA workplace training requirements. This is an excellent course to train employees in addition to those trained to meet OSHA regulation. Companies who want all employees trained may opt to train a portion in a complete CPR/first aid course and the remaining employees in the CarePlus course. Contact your Client Services representative to learn how this course can assist you in growing your business or training employees in your company.

Sudden cardiac arrest primarily affects adults but can also strike infants and children. The HeartStart Home, Onsite, and FR2+ Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) from Philips have been designed to use special pediatric defibrillation pads that contain an attenuated circuit to reduce the energy to deliver appropriate defibrillation shocks to infants and young children. MEDIC FIRST AID International has developed and produced an "add-on" training program segment to train providers in the use of these new pediatric defibrillation pads. It includes a short video piece, student handout, and Facilitator Guide pages for each defibrillator. This program segment can be added to the MEDIC FIRST AID AED Supplement training program. The AED Supplement can be combined with any CPR or CPR/first aid training program including MEDIC FIRST AID Basic and MEDIC FIRST AID Pediatric, or used as a stand-alone AED training class for individuals who have been previously trained in CPR. The cost of the Pediatric AED Training Package is $29.95, Item No. 1049.
