MEDIC FIRST AID Releases New Programs

MEDIC FIRST AID® announces the release of four new programs. Bloodborne Pathogens, Emergency Oxygen, and Infant/Child are supplements to MEDIC FIRST AID Basic, Version 5.0. The other program is MEDIC FIRST AID Basic for Corrections and Law Enforcement.

The Bloodborne Pathogens training program provides essential knowledge necessary to help reduce or eliminate the occupational risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The goal of the course is to help students understand their risks and develop behaviors that will help protect them when they are exposed to potentially infectious material. This program is designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training regulations in regard to bloodborne pathogens and makes an ideal supplement to a CPR and first aid training program. It may also be used as a stand-alone program.

The Emergency Oxygen Supplement teaches first aid providers how to use supplemental oxygen during an emergency prior to the arrival of EMS. Flexible in its approach, there are options for various oxygen delivery devices to account for different client and patient needs. This program is designed to meet federal requirements for training to be able to fill emergency oxygen systems.

The Infant/Child Supplement teaches the management of life-threatening events involving children. This supplement teaches providers the skills needed to respond to medical emergencies involving infants and children (from one to eight years) until more advanced medical help arrives. The supplement is intended to follow a MEDIC FIRST AID Basic class.

MEDIC FIRST AID Basic for Corrections and Law Enforcement is a custom version of the basic program that addresses their special needs. A panel of MEDIC FIRST AID Facilitators from corrections and law enforcement provided vital input towards the development of this special version. The most significant difference in providing emergency care by corrections and law enforcement officers is in the initial approach to the patient. For this reason a modified version of SETUP (scene assessment) was created to minimize the risk for the officers. A supplement to the Basic Facilitator Guide is available to assist teaching in this unique environment.

EMP Now Called... MEDIC FIRST AID International, Inc.

EMP America, Inc. and EMP International, Inc. have been merged into one corporation and, effective April 1, 2002, will do business as MEDIC FIRST AID International, Inc. Corporate identity is an evolving process. The original company name, Emergency Medical Planning, Inc., was an accurate reflection of the company focus at that time. When the business shifted from response planning to training, the name was shortened to EMP. When the MEDIC FIRST AID name was conceived and introduced in 1980, it reflected the merging of professional level emergency care (Medic) with lay rescuers (First Aid) to create a continuity of care.

As the MEDIC FIRST AID Family of Programs has evolved and become more established, the EMP America and EMP International names have caused some confusion. So, for simplification purposes and to better reflect the company's purpose, MEDIC FIRST AID International, Inc will be the company's name. When you reach for a product with the MEDIC FIRST AID name and logo, you can count on over twenty-five years of commitment to providing you and your clients superior response training products.

Emergency Oxygen Supplement - Frequently Asked Questions

What's the course all about?

The Emergency Oxygen Supplement will provide students with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency oxygen to a suddenly ill or injured patient until more advanced medical help can be obtained.

How long will the course take?

The recommended completion time for the MEDIC FIRST AID Emergency Oxygen Supplement is one to two hours. The greatest determination of time involves the student to manikin ratio and student to oxygen equipment ratio.

What are the course prerequisites?

It is required that each student have a valid and current CPR or CPR/First Aid training card to receive a signed Emergency Oxygen Supplement successful completion card.

What are the recommended ratios for this course?

For CPR training manikins, the ratio is 6:1 maximum student to manikin ratio. For emergency oxygen equipment, the ratio is 6:1 maximum student to emergency oxygen equipment ratio. While 6:1 is maximum, a 2:1 ratio is recommended.

What are the required Facilitator Materials?

The required MEDIC FIRST AID Emergency Oxygen Supplement Facilitator materials are:

  1. Emergency Oxygen Program Video
  2. Emergency Oxygen Facilitator Guide
  3. Class Roster.

What are the required Student Materials?

Each student must be provided with:

  1. Emergency Oxygen Supplement Successful Completion Pack
  2. Pair of disposable barrier gloves
  3. Disposable mouthpiece or valve for ventilation mask.

What oxygen equipment is required for the course?

  1. Emergency oxygen system (cylinder, regulator, tubing)
  2. Ventilation mask with supplemental oxygen inlet
  3. Oxygen delivery device for a breathing patient. Could be:
    • Combination delivery/ventilation mask
    • Non-rebreather mask (recommended)
    • Partial rebreather mask
    • Simple face mask.

What type of emergency oxygen equipment should be used?

The only requirement is that the emergency oxygen system meets the US Food and Drug Administration requirement of providing "a minimum of six (6) liters per minute for a minimum of 15 minutes."

Where do I purchase oxygen equipment?

MEDIC FIRST AID will sell emergency oxygen equipment that is suitable for use during training. Oxygen cylinders can be purchased or rented locally.

How do I become a Facilitator in the MEDIC FIRST AID Emergency Oxygen Supplement?

To become a Facilitator in the new program, you must be a current MFA Basic, Version 5.0 Facilitator or successfully complete the MFA Facilitator Self-Study Program, and provide documentation of training in the use of emergency oxygen. Acceptable documentation includes:

  1. Current status as an EMT, Paramedic, RT, RN, or MD
  2. Current student-level card from a nationally recognized training program (ARC, NSC, or DAN)
  3. Current Facilitator of a nationally recognized training program (ARC, NSC, or DAN).

The Emergency Oxygen Supplement is integrated into the Facilitator Training conducted by MEDIC FIRST AID. You may attend the segment on the use of emergency oxygen.

I already have oxygen equipment in use at my facility. Do I have to train my providers on different types of delivery systems?

No, the program is flexible enough to allow a Facilitator to use any oxygen delivery system as long as it meets the FDA requirement. In fact, we encourage Facilitators to train to their specific equipment. The training segment that covers the various types of delivery equipment is an optional segment and can be skipped when a single type of system will be used.

MEDIC FIRST AID Benchmark Facilitator Survey Results

Over the next year, Visions will present some of the results from the 2001 MEDIC FIRST AID Benchmark Facilitator Survey. 3,000 surveys were sent to a random sample of Facilitators that asked their perceptions of MEDIC FIRST AID, our services, and products. 502 Facilitators (16.7% response rate) returned the survey within the specified time and were included in the survey. A drawing was held for those who returned their surveys. Devin Boss, Universal City, CA; Robert Carney, Vicksburg, MS; Toni Gilbert, Port Angeles, WA; Douglas Hardy, Cicero, IL; Danita Roe, Longview, TX; Ronald Squibb, Dillingham, AK; Robert Van Duyne, Boulder, CO; and Koni Weatherford, Albuquerque, NM, each received gift certificates in the amount of $100.

According to the 2001 MEDIC FIRST AID Benchmark Facilitator Survey nearly half of our Facilitators have been teaching for ten or more years. Two-thirds have been state certified EMS responders. Over ninety percent have access to the internet.

The information provided by the survey will assist in guiding the future development of programs, products, and services to our clients. This survey will be conducted annually in the fall. We appreciate your time and effort in providing feedback.
